Choose IVF to overcome Infertility & Embrace Parenthood
In vitro fertilization or IVF is an assisted reproductive methodology and so far, has been the most commonly used treatment for fertility. Couples who want to have a baby but face infertility issues either in the woman or the man, are often recommended IVF depending on their problems. This term actually means fertilization (union of sperm and egg) outside the body.
In India, IVF has now gained popularity due to the availability of specialty clinics with well-experienced experts. Hospitals like IVF Gangaram – Centre for IVF and Human Reproduction in Delhi, have been successful in delivering the hope of parenthood to thousands of infertile couples, with their affordable low-cost IVF treatment and world-class facilities for more than 25 years now.
The Process of IVF:
If simply put into words, three things are required for an IVF process; healthy eggs, fertile sperms and a healthy uterus that can carry the pregnancy.
Step 1 –Controlled Ovarian Stimulation
This is the process of stimulation wherein hormonal injections are given to develop multiple eggs (10-15) in the ovaries. The Best Fertility Clinic in Delhi monitor the response with ultrasound and blood hormone levels for which 3-4 visits are required in approximately 8-10 days.
Step 2 – Egg retrieval
Performed in an operation theater, this process is done under intravenous anesthesia. Vaginal ultrasound is used to guide a needle to the follicles in ovaries from where the fluid is collected and simultaneously scanned to retrieve all available eggs. After retrieval, eggs are placed in nutritional media and set for culturing in an incubator.
Step 3 – Fertilization
Partner’s semen sample is collected and prepared. If the sample is good, sperms are just transferred to a dish containing eggs, this process is called standard insemination. In case sperms are below normal, they are directly injected in the egg which is called ICSI. The sperm and egg are then incubated to develop into a healthy embryo.
Step 4 – Transfer
The embryologist evaluates the embryos based on their appearance and speed of development, the best ones are chosen for the implant. This generally happens on the 3rd or 5th day after egg retrieval. Embryos are laden in a soft catheter and placed in the uterine cavity through the cervix under ultrasound guidance.
A woman can take a pregnancy test after two weeks of the egg retrieval. Age, physical fitness, lifestyle etc. also influence the success of IVF. Good IVF centers all over the world have an average success rate of 40-45%.
Safety of the procedure
The complications associated with IVF are ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome and multiple pregnancies, all measures are taken to prevent them. It is overall a safe procedure with negligible risks.
